Cades Cove
"On the peaceful side of the Smokies!" Cades Cove is 2500-acres of open space located in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It is a beautiful, sheltered valley
with a mixture of forests, meadows, and an outdoor museum of pioneer life of the 1800's. Even today in our 'advance' society, you can still find remnants of a more primitive way of life in Cades Cove. The
beauty and fun of Cades Cove is only a 7-mile drive from Townsend.
Cades Cove can be enjoyed by car and bicycle or exploring the many trails on foot or horseback. Stop and purchase a copy of the auto tour booklet and drive the 11
-mile paved Loop Road and see wildlife such as deer, turkeys, black bears, ground hogs, and hawks. The best time for wildlife viewing is early morning or late
afternoon. You'll also see a water-powered grist mill and several preserved pioneer cabins and houses for a glimpse of days gone by.
Horseback riding and hayrides are also a wonderful way to get the most of Cades Cove by touring the wooded trails. Plan to stop and have a picnic in park!
